What happens during wisdom tooth extraction?

Impacted wisdom teeth occur when the third molars do not have enough space to grow in properly. They may come in at an awkward angle or become trapped below the gumline, leading to pain or crowding of the nearby teeth.

During wisdom tooth extraction at Tri-State Oral & Facial Surgery, the area is numbed, and sedation options are available for comfort. We may make an incision and break up the tooth if needed. Once the tooth is removed, the site is properly cleaned, and stitches may be placed. Recovery from dental surgery takes several days to a week.

Why your diet matters after surgery

After wisdom tooth removal, your mouth needs time to heal. The extraction sites are vulnerable, and eating the wrong foods can cause pain, damage the healing tissue, or dislodge the blood clot that forms in the socket. This issue, called "dry socket," delays recovery and causes significant discomfort.

Sticking to soft, easy-to-eat foods helps protect the extraction sites and supports a healthy recovery.

What to eat after wisdom tooth removal

Here are some safe and nutritious options for the first few days of recovery from dental surgery:

  • Smoothies and protein shakes: Blend seedless fruits, yogurt, and protein powder for a nutrient-rich meal.
  • Yogurt and pudding: Soft, cool, and easy to eat without chewing.
  • Mashed potatoes: Filling and gentle on your mouth. Add butter or gravy for extra calories.
  • Scrambled eggs: Soft, protein-rich, and easy to prepare.
  • Soup and broth: Choose lukewarm options rather than hot soups. Avoid soups with chunks that require chewing.

Your oral surgeon at Tri-State Oral & Facial Surgery in Ashland, KY can provide a more detailed list of foods to eat and how long you should follow any restrictions.

Watching out for symptoms of dry socket

Dry socket happens when the blood clot at the extraction site becomes dislodged prematurely. Symptoms of dry socket include:

  • Intense pain that radiates to the ear or jaw
  • A bad taste or foul odor in your mouth
  • Visible bone in the socket

If you experience these symptoms, call your oral surgeon right away. Treatment involves cleaning the socket and placing a medicated dressing to encourage healing and relieve pain.

I can’t say enough great things about Dr. Couchot and his staff! They make you feel at ease, professional top notch from beginning to end. So highly recommended! I would not go anywhere else. I have been going there since 2022.

I had a surgical extraction today. This is the best experience I have had at a dental office. All of the staff were professional and nice and answered all of my questions and concerns. After reading other reviews, I did not experience the "no bedside manner" reported of Dr. Couchot, but he IS an excellent surgeon. There is no aspect of the care I received that I could say anything negative about. Highly recommend!

It's been a few years since I saw Dr Couchot. I am writing because I had a wonder experience with him and his staff. But what stands out the most is he advised me at the time that I had a heart mumur. He suggested I discuss with my primary care doctor. I did and was pretty much dismissed. Several years later and 3 different doctors including cardiologists and I am now having Mitral Valve replacement with complications. Had he not told me of the murmur I never would have pursued the problem. Thank you Dr Couchot
