What Is 3D Imaging?
At Tri-State Oral & Facial Surgery, 3D imaging is an advanced diagnostic tool that allows board-certified oral surgeon Dr. Michael D. Couchot to capture highly detailed, three-dimensional views of your teeth, jaw, and surrounding structures. Unlike traditional X-rays, 3D imaging provides a complete, accurate picture from every angle, helping us diagnose issues more precisely and plan treatments with greater confidence. Whether you're preparing for dental implants, wisdom tooth removal, or other oral surgery procedures, 3D imaging ensures a safer, more efficient, and personalized approach to your care. How Is 3D Imaging Performed?
3D imaging is performed using a specialized machine called a cone beam CT (CBCT) scanner, which rotates around the head to capture a series of detailed images. The process is quick and noninvasive, typically taking less than a minute. The patient will simply stand or sit still while the scanner creates a comprehensive 3D model of their teeth, jawbone, nerves, and soft tissues. This advanced imaging technology allows Dr. Couchot to analyze the anatomy with remarkable accuracy and develop a treatment plan tailored specifically to each patient's needs.

Tri-State Oral & Facial Surgery Reviews
Went for wisdom tooth removal, went very smoothly. Professional, quick, easy.
Ihad a tooth pulled from him his staff was amazing he was to I was there maybe a hour if that and I was first time patient and that's with paper work and all I would highly recommend If I ever need anything else done he is my go to for sure
I can’t say enough great things about Dr. Couchot and his staff! They make you feel at ease, professional top notch from beginning to end. So highly recommended! I would not go anywhere else. I have been going there since 2022.
I had a surgical extraction today. This is the best experience I have had at a dental office. All of the staff were professional and nice and answered all of my questions and concerns. After reading other reviews, I did not experience the "no bedside manner" reported of Dr. Couchot, but he IS an excellent surgeon. There is no aspect of the care I received that I could say anything negative about. Highly recommend!
It's been a few years since I saw Dr Couchot. I am writing because I had a wonder experience with him and his staff. But what stands out the most is he advised me at the time that I had a heart mumur. He suggested I discuss with my primary care doctor. I did and was pretty much dismissed. Several years later and 3 different doctors including cardiologists and I am now having Mitral Valve replacement with complications. Had he not told me of the murmur I never would have pursued the problem. Thank you Dr Couchot

Am I A Candidate For 3D Imaging?
Almost any patient undergoing oral surgery can be a candidate for 3D imaging. It is particularly beneficial for individuals preparing for procedures that require detailed anatomical information, such as dental implant placement, wisdom tooth extraction, corrective jaw surgery, and treatment for oral pathologies. Patients with complex cases, or those who have had previous surgeries, may also find 3D imaging essential for achieving the best possible outcomes. Dr. Couchot will determine if 3D imaging is right for you during your consultation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does 3D oral imaging involve radiation exposure?
Yes, 3D oral imaging with CBCT does involve a small amount of radiation, but the exposure is low and controlled. Our providers only recommend CBCT imaging when the diagnostic benefit clearly outweighs the minimal exposure, such as for planning dental implants, evaluating impacted teeth, or assessing complex root or jaw anatomy. The goal is always to gather the most accurate information possible while keeping radiation exposure as low as reasonably achievable.
Is 3D oral imaging safe for kids?
Yes, CBCT imaging can be safely used for children when considered clinically appropriate. Pediatric imaging protocols are adjusted to account for a child’s size and developing anatomy, using the lowest radiation settings needed to capture useful images. Our team carefully evaluates whether 3D imaging is necessary and will only recommend it when it provides information that cannot be obtained with standard X-rays. When used thoughtfully, CBCT imaging can help guide safer, more precise treatment planning for growing patients.
Can I keep my jewelry on during 3D imaging?
In most cases, jewelry will need to be removed before 3D oral imaging. Metal objects such as earrings, necklaces, facial piercings, or removable dental appliances can interfere with image quality by creating distortion or artifacts in the scan. Removing these items helps ensure the clearest and most accurate images possible, which allows our providers to make confident treatment decisions. Our team will guide you through exactly what needs to be removed before the scan so the process is quick and straightforward.
