Bone Grafting in Ashland, KY

At Tri-State Oral & Facial Surgery, board-certified oral surgeon Dr. Michael D. Couchot performs dental bone grafts to help restore bone structure in areas where it has weakened or deteriorated, often due to tooth loss, gum disease, or trauma. Bone grafting involves placing specialized material — either synthetic or natural — into the area of bone loss to encourage your body’s natural bone regeneration process. This procedure is commonly used to prepare the jaw for dental implants or to preserve bone after a tooth extraction, helping ensure long-term oral health and a stable foundation for future dental work. Bone grafting is a meticulous surgical procedure performed by Dr. Couchot to restore areas of the jaw that have experienced bone loss — commonly in preparation for dental implants or to preserve bone after a tooth extraction. The procedure typically takes 45 – 90 minutes, depending on the size and complexity of the graft. It begins with local anesthesia or sedation to ensure comfort, followed by a small incision in the gum to access the site. Dr. Couchot then cleans the area and places the grafting material, which may be secured with a protective membrane or mesh before the gum is sutured closed. Healing generally occurs over 3 – 6 months, during which the graft integrates with your natural bone to rebuild strength and structure. Grafting material may come from various sources, including:

  • Autograft: Bone from your own body, often the jaw, chin, or hip, offering natural compatibility
  • Allograft: Sterilized bone from a human donor, widely used for convenience and safety
  • Xenograft: Bone sourced from animals (typically bovine) and processed for biocompatibility
  • Alloplast: A synthetic material designed to mimic natural bone and stimulate regeneration

With careful planning and advanced techniques, bone grafting helps provide a strong, lasting foundation for future dental treatments.

I had a surgical extraction today. This is the best experience I have had at a dental office. All of the staff were professional and nice and answered all of my questions and concerns. After reading other reviews, I did not experience the "no bedside manner" reported of Dr. Couchot, but he IS an excellent surgeon. There is no aspect of the care I received that I could say anything negative about. Highly recommend!

It's been a few years since I saw Dr Couchot. I am writing because I had a wonder experience with him and his staff. But what stands out the most is he advised me at the time that I had a heart mumur. He suggested I discuss with my primary care doctor. I did and was pretty much dismissed. Several years later and 3 different doctors including cardiologists and I am now having Mitral Valve replacement with complications. Had he not told me of the murmur I never would have pursued the problem. Thank you Dr Couchot

Ideal candidates for a dental bone graft are individuals who have experienced a loss of bone density in their jaw. This can occur for several reasons, including tooth loss, advanced gum disease, facial trauma, or developmental defects. Patients planning to receive dental implants often require bone grafting to ensure sufficient bone to securely support the implant. Additionally, bone grafting may be recommended following a tooth extraction to preserve the jawbone. A thorough evaluation with Dr. Couchot, including imaging tests, will determine if you are a suitable candidate for the procedure.

Will I feel anything during a bone grafting procedure?

Bone grafting is performed with your comfort in mind, and most patients do not feel pain during the procedure itself. Our team uses local anesthesia to fully numb the treatment area before beginning, and sedation options may also be available depending on the complexity of the graft and your comfort level. You may feel pressure or movement during the procedure, but sharp pain should not be present. After the procedure, some soreness or swelling is normal as healing begins, but this is typically manageable with prescribed or over-the-counter medications and detailed aftercare instructions provided by our team.

For an autograft procedure, is my bone extracted at the same appointment as the graft?

Yes, when an autograft is recommended, the bone is typically harvested and placed during the same appointment. This allows our providers to complete the grafting process efficiently while minimizing the number of surgical visits. The donor bone is usually taken from another area of the mouth or jaw, depending on the amount needed and the specific treatment plan. Our team carefully plans autograft procedures in advance, explains where the donor bone will come from, and reviews what to expect during healing at both the donor and graft sites.

Will I need someone to drive me to and from a bone graft procedure?

Whether you need a driver depends on the type of anesthesia or sedation used during your procedure. If bone grafting is performed with local anesthesia alone, many patients are able to drive themselves home afterward. However, if nitrous oxide, IV sedation, or general anesthesia is used, you will need a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you for a short period of time. Our team reviews anesthesia options and transportation requirements ahead of your appointment so you can plan accordingly.
