Sedation dentistry works by using medication to help patients relax during dental or oral surgery procedures, and the type of sedation used depends on the patient’s needs and the complexity of the treatment. Under the care of Dr. Couchot, patients have access to several effective sedation options, including:

  • Local Anesthesia: Numbs the specific area being treated while you remain fully awake and aware
  • Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas): A mild sedative inhaled through a mask that helps you feel calm and relaxed, with the effects wearing off quickly after the procedure
  • IV Sedation: Delivered through a vein for rapid effect and deeper sedation; you may remain semi-conscious or have little memory of the procedure
  • General Anesthesia: Used for more complex surgeries, this method puts you into a deep sleep so you’re completely unaware and pain-free during treatment

Each method is carefully administered and monitored to ensure your safety and comfort throughout the entire process.

I had a surgical extraction today. This is the best experience I have had at a dental office. All of the staff were professional and nice and answered all of my questions and concerns. After reading other reviews, I did not experience the "no bedside manner" reported of Dr. Couchot, but he IS an excellent surgeon. There is no aspect of the care I received that I could say anything negative about. Highly recommend!

It's been a few years since I saw Dr Couchot. I am writing because I had a wonder experience with him and his staff. But what stands out the most is he advised me at the time that I had a heart mumur. He suggested I discuss with my primary care doctor. I did and was pretty much dismissed. Several years later and 3 different doctors including cardiologists and I am now having Mitral Valve replacement with complications. Had he not told me of the murmur I never would have pursued the problem. Thank you Dr Couchot

Ideal candidates for sedation dentistry are individuals who experience significant dental anxiety or fear, which might prevent them from seeking necessary oral care. It is also a suitable option for patients with a low pain threshold, a sensitive gag reflex, or those who need to undergo lengthy or multiple procedures in a single visit. Additionally, patients with physical limitations or conditions that make it difficult to sit still for extended periods can benefit from sedation. Dr. Couchot will evaluate your medical history and discuss your comfort level to determine if sedation dentistry is the right choice for you.

Is dental anesthesia safe for kids?

Yes, dental sedation can be safe for children when it is carefully selected and administered by trained providers. Our team evaluates a child’s age, weight, medical history, anxiety level, and the type of procedure being performed before recommending any form of sedation. Options such as local anesthesia or nitrous oxide are commonly used for pediatric patients and are well tolerated when used appropriately. For more complex procedures, deeper forms of sedation may be considered, with close monitoring throughout treatment. Safety is always the priority, and sedation is only recommended when the benefits clearly outweigh any risks.

Will I need someone to drive me to and from an appointment that involves anesthesia?

Whether you need a driver depends on the type of sedation used during your visit. If treatment is performed with local anesthesia alone or nitrous oxide, most patients are able to drive themselves home and resume normal activities shortly afterward, as the effects wear off quickly. However, if IV sedation or general anesthesia is part of your treatment plan, you will need a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you for a period of time after the appointment. Our team reviews these requirements in advance so you can plan confidently and avoid any last-minute surprises.

Will dental anesthesia make me feel sick to my stomach?

Most patients tolerate dental sedation very well, but mild side effects such as nausea can occur in some cases, particularly with deeper levels of sedation. Factors such as individual sensitivity, medications taken beforehand, and whether pre-procedure instructions were followed can all play a role. Our providers take steps to minimize the risk of nausea by reviewing medical history, giving clear eating and drinking guidelines before treatment, and adjusting sedation methods as needed. If nausea does occur, it is usually temporary and resolves quickly as the sedation wears off.
