What Is Oral Pathology?
At Tri-State Oral & Facial Surgery, board-certified oral surgeon Dr. Michael D. Couchot provides oral pathology, which focuses on diagnosing and treating diseases that affect the mouth, jaws, and surrounding tissues. This includes conditions such as cysts, tumors, infections, and oral cancer, many of which may not be visible or painful in their early stages. Through detailed clinical evaluations, biopsies, oral cancer screenings, and advanced imaging, Dr. Couchot identifies abnormalities and develops personalized treatment plans to address concerns promptly. Early detection through oral pathology is key to preventing more serious complications and supporting long-term oral health. How Are Oral Pathology Exams Performed?
Dr. Couchot performs oral pathology exams by carefully evaluating the mouth, jaw, and surrounding tissues for any unusual signs, such as lumps, sores, or discoloration, that could indicate underlying disease. These comprehensive exams typically take 15 – 30 minutes, depending on the findings. If an area of concern is detected, a biopsy may be performed during the same visit or scheduled shortly after. The biopsy procedure, which usually takes 20 – 40 minutes, involves removing a small tissue sample under local anesthesia with minimal discomfort. The sample is then sent to a pathology lab for detailed microscopic analysis. This process helps determine whether the tissue is benign, precancerous, or malignant, allowing for early diagnosis and appropriate treatment planning.

I can’t say enough great things about Dr. Couchot and his staff! They make you feel at ease, professional top notch from beginning to end. So highly recommended! I would not go anywhere else. I have been going there since 2022.
I had a surgical extraction today. This is the best experience I have had at a dental office. All of the staff were professional and nice and answered all of my questions and concerns. After reading other reviews, I did not experience the "no bedside manner" reported of Dr. Couchot, but he IS an excellent surgeon. There is no aspect of the care I received that I could say anything negative about. Highly recommend!

Frequently Asked Questions
Is an oral pathology exam painful?
An oral pathology exam is a visual and tactile evaluation that is completely painless. Dr. Couchot will carefully inspect your mouth and surrounding tissues for any abnormalities without causing discomfort. Should a biopsy be necessary, the area will be numbed with local anesthesia to ensure a pain-free procedure.
What happens if an abnormality is found during my exam?
If Tri-State Oral & Facial Surgery discovers a suspicious area, the next step is typically a biopsy to get a definitive diagnosis. We will explain the findings to you, discuss the biopsy procedure, and answer any questions you may have. This allows for a precise treatment plan to be created based on the lab's analysis.
