What Is Pre-Prosthetic Surgery?
At Tri-State Oral & Facial Surgery, board-certified oral surgeon Dr. Michael D. Couchot provides pre-prosthetic surgery to help patients achieve the best possible outcome with dentures or other dental prosthetics. This surgical preparation is performed to ensure the mouth has the proper shape and structure needed to support a secure, comfortable fit. It’s often recommended when natural irregularities or changes in the jawbone and soft tissues could interfere with how a denture fits or functions. By addressing these issues in advance, pre-prosthetic surgery helps improve comfort, stability, and long-term success with prosthetic appliances. How Is Pre-Prosthetic Surgery Performed?
Dr. Couchot performs pre-prosthetic surgery with the goal of creating an optimal foundation for dental prosthetics such as dentures. The procedure typically begins with a thorough evaluation and imaging to assess the shape and condition of the jawbone and surrounding tissues. Depending on the patient’s needs, the surgery may involve techniques such as smoothing or reshaping the bone, removing excess gum or soft tissue, or eliminating bony growths that could interfere with the fit of a denture. The procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia or sedation for comfort and can vary in length based on the complexity of the case. After surgery, patients are given post-operative care instructions to support healing and ensure the mouth is properly prepared for their dental prosthetic.

I can’t say enough great things about Dr. Couchot and his staff! They make you feel at ease, professional top notch from beginning to end. So highly recommended! I would not go anywhere else. I have been going there since 2022.
I had a surgical extraction today. This is the best experience I have had at a dental office. All of the staff were professional and nice and answered all of my questions and concerns. After reading other reviews, I did not experience the "no bedside manner" reported of Dr. Couchot, but he IS an excellent surgeon. There is no aspect of the care I received that I could say anything negative about. Highly recommend!

Frequently Asked Questions
Is pre-prosthetic surgery painful?
Patient comfort is a top priority, so the procedure is performed under local anesthesia or sedation to minimize any pain. After surgery, you may experience some mild discomfort, swelling, or bruising, which can be managed with prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication. Dr. Couchot will ensure you have everything you need for a comfortable recovery.
What happens if I don't get pre-prosthetic surgery?
Without a stable foundation, your dentures may not fit securely, leading to issues like slipping, discomfort, and mouth sores. This poor fit can make it difficult to chew and speak confidently, potentially requiring frequent adjustments. Pre-prosthetic surgery in Ashland, KY, helps prevent these problems and ensures a better long-term outcome.
How should I prepare for pre-prosthetic surgery?
Before your surgery, Tri-State Oral & Facial Surgery will provide you with a set of pre-operative instructions to follow. These may include guidelines on eating or drinking before your appointment, especially if you are receiving sedation. Be sure to arrange for someone to drive you home after the procedure.
