What Is Bone Morphogenetic Protein?
At Tri-State Oral & Facial Surgery, Dr. Michael D. Couchot uses bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) as an advanced option in bone grafting procedures to promote natural bone growth. BMP is a synthetic version of a protein found in the body that plays a key role in bone healing and regeneration. When placed at the surgical site, BMP helps stimulate your body’s own cells to form new bone, often reducing the need for harvesting bone from another part of the body. This innovative approach supports faster healing and can enhance the success of treatments like dental implants or jaw reconstruction. To learn more about how BMP may help enhance your dental healing, contact our Ashland, KY office to schedule a consultation.
How Does Bone Morphogenetic Protein Work?
BMP works by encouraging the body to regenerate bone at a surgical site, making it a valuable tool in procedures that require bone growth, such as dental implants or ridge augmentation. During the procedure, Dr. Couchot places a sterile collagen sponge soaked with BMP directly into the area where bone growth is needed. This sponge acts as a scaffold, releasing the protein gradually to stimulate the body’s natural healing response. Over time, the BMP signals surrounding cells to transform into bone-forming cells, promoting the development of strong, healthy bone without the need for additional bone grafts from other areas of the body. The sponge is eventually absorbed by the body as new bone takes its place.
What Are the Benefits of Bone Morphogenetic Protein?
Bone morphogenetic protein offers several benefits by enhancing natural bone regeneration and improving surgical outcomes, including:
- Eliminates the need for harvesting bone from other areas
- Reduces overall surgery and recovery time
- Promotes faster and more predictable bone growth
- Minimizes discomfort and postoperative complications
- Supports long-term success of dental implants and grafts
- Safe, biocompatible, and gradually absorbed by the body
- Ideal for patients with limited bone availability
- Enhances healing in complex or large bone defects
Tri-State Oral & Facial Surgery Reviews
I highly recommend if you need a tooth extracted. I have Trigeminal neuralgia ‘a chronic facial pain within the nerves’ they reacted with care. The staff are friendly. The environment is clean and comfortable.
Went for wisdom tooth removal, went very smoothly. Professional, quick, easy.
Ihad a tooth pulled from him his staff was amazing he was to I was there maybe a hour if that and I was first time patient and that's with paper work and all I would highly recommend If I ever need anything else done he is my go to for sure
I can’t say enough great things about Dr. Couchot and his staff! They make you feel at ease, professional top notch from beginning to end. So highly recommended! I would not go anywhere else. I have been going there since 2022.
I had a surgical extraction today. This is the best experience I have had at a dental office. All of the staff were professional and nice and answered all of my questions and concerns. After reading other reviews, I did not experience the "no bedside manner" reported of Dr. Couchot, but he IS an excellent surgeon. There is no aspect of the care I received that I could say anything negative about. Highly recommend!

Am I a Candidate for Bone Morphogenetic Protein?
Successful bone regeneration is an important part of many oral and maxillofacial procedures, but not every patient heals in exactly the same way. BMP may be recommended for patients who need additional support for bone formation in certain surgical situations, helping reduce the need for harvesting bone from another area of the body in some cases. During your consultation, our team will carefully evaluate your anatomy, treatment goals, and surgical needs to determine whether BMP is appropriate. You may be a candidate if you:
- Need bone regeneration before dental implants
- Require jaw reconstruction or corrective surgery
- Have insufficient bone volume in the treatment area
- Are undergoing certain oral or maxillofacial surgical procedures
- Want to minimize the need for additional bone graft harvest sites when appropriate
- Are in good overall health for surgery
- Have realistic expectations for healing
- Can follow postoperative instructions carefully
BMP is not necessary for every patient or every procedure. Our team will recommend its use only when it offers meaningful benefits based on your individual anatomy, surgical plan, and long-term treatment goals.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the BMP procedure painful?
Tri-State Oral & Facial Surgery ensures that the BMP procedure is as comfortable as possible by using local anesthesia or sedation. Most patients report minimal discomfort during and after the procedure. Any soreness can typically be managed with over-the-counter pain medications.
How long does the BMP procedure take?
The BMP placement is typically completed during your bone grafting or implant procedure, so it does not require additional time. The actual placement of the BMP sponge is quick and straightforward. Dr. Couchot plans each treatment carefully to ensure efficiency and effectiveness.
Is BMP safe for everyone?
BMP is considered safe for most patients, but it may not be suitable for individuals with certain medical conditions, such as active infections or specific allergies. Our team in Ashland, KY, will thoroughly review your medical history and discuss whether BMP is the right option for you. Patient safety and optimal results are always the priority.
