Anesthesia Options

The following are some of the types of anesthesia that will be discussed by Dr. Couchot at your consultation visit.

Local anesthesia

Numbing injections are given in the appropriate area(s).

  • It is not necessary to change your eating habits before your appointment.
  • Please take any prescription medications as you normally would.

Nitrous Oxide and local anesthesia

Nitrous Oxide gas is administered to provide a relaxed, awake state. Numbing injections are then given in the appropriate area(s).

  • It is not necessary to change your eating habits before your appointment unless instructed otherwise by the Doctor.
  • Please take any prescription medications as you normally would.

Intravenous anesthesia

Intravenous (IV) medications are given to produce a semiconscious or unconscious condition. In addition, numbing injections in surgery are administered while you sleep.

  • Nothing to eat or drink for at least eight hours preoperatively (food or liquid). You should take any prescription medications as instructed by Dr Couchot with a sip of water only.
  • You will need a responsible adult with you to drive you home. This is very important! Your escort must be present before and after your procedure, and should plan to stay with you the remainder of the day.
  • You should wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. A short sleeve shirt is desirable. Remove all jewelry and nail polish before the appointment. If you wear contact lenses, please remove them before your appointment and wear eyeglasses instead.
  • No smoking at least 12 hours before surgery. Ideally, smoking cessation is encouraged.
